1998-99 In Memoriam

Following the recent deaths of both the Founder of the University of Maryland Gymkana Troupe, Dr. David Field, and the former Director of more than three decades, Dr. George Kramer, it was an emotionally difficult time to begin the 1998-1999 season. Dr. Murray described the preparation for and the start of the season as being, “one of the hardest things I have had to do in my life.” Dr. Kramer was a regular presence for the Troupe, and passing was particularly challenging. Dr. Murray spoke of the loss of his mentor and friend, “Although I have been coaching Gymkana since 1967 and have been its Director since 1983, George has always been around to lend support and to give valuable advice. Now for the first time, we all face the challenge of continuing on without him.”

Then adding, “Although I find this difficult and still find myself slipping into periods of depression, I know together we will be able to continue.”

Indeed, the Troupe did carry on and they dedicated this season to the memory of Dr. Field and Dr. Kramer. They were aided by the additions of Jonathan Szczepanski and Bryan Murray to assist as volunteer coaches, and Judy Kuester as an athletic trainer. The Troupe’s roster was smaller than usual at about 38 members.

A highlight of the season was the showcase of Gymkana at the University of Maryland’s Midnight Madness, a celebration of the start to the university’s basketball season. The Troupe performed its vaulting act, complete with its signature fire hoop, and was even featured by ESPN.

The annual Home Show took place at Cole Field House on April 16 & 17, 1999. The shows were moved to a 7:00PM start time, earlier than years past to better accommodate families with children.
